1. To give you something else to worry about besides impending mommyhood. 2. All that tofu. 3. Kids actually develop to about 3 years old (the age of reason) in utero. It is upon reaching this age that they realize their mistake and spend then following 3 months regressing to a more comfortingly ingnorant age.
